It’s officially the time during which we mere mortals scroll through Pinterest and IG cherry-picking our fall hair color inspo. We’ll pull references from celebrities, runways, and the top salons all over the world. But...what exactly are celebrities asking for in the first place? It’s a classic chicken-and-egg scenario. Dw, tho, I asked the pros firsthand: What are the elite set asking for this year, for those of us who want to get in on the trends a little early? And they delivered. Keep scrolling for the coolest fall hair colors of 2024, according to colorists who work with Madelyn Cline, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and more.

1

10K Goldlights

“This color is golden blonde in color and tone, with ‘10k gold lights’ that have a cool reflect for the perfect sparkle,” says celebrity hairstylist Matt Rez, who claims this will be the biggest hair color trend this fall (aka take notes). “They are blended yet impactful and run through the lengths in ribbon form,” he adds. See the look above he did on Demi Lovato? “This look has high contrast due to strategic color placement, which really helps them pop against medium- to light-brown base colors,” he explains, noting that it’s great for a low-maintenance hair look that seems high-maintenance.

2

Lived-In Blonde

I’m also not totally ready to get rid of my beachy summer blonde. But instead of scrapping the highlights I worked so hard for, I’m asking my stylist for a root smudge à la Tate McRae above. Her hair perfectly embodies this trend of ~perfectly imperfect~ color that looks like it’s been cookin’ a while.

Cowboy Copper

Ready to dip your toe in the land of red hair? Try “cowboy copper,” which blends rich spicy hues with brown tones for a softer look. The trend was all over TikTok last year, but it’s not going anywhere for fall 2024 (we can prob thank Cowboy Carter for that).

4

Umber Brunette

This brown hair look is sooo far from boring. There are so many unique tones and variations of brown hair colors, including this deep, cool-toned brown that balayages into a warmer toner at the ends on Ana de Armas.

5

Dark Chocolate

Wanna look rich as hell? Just go with a super-deep-brunette hair color, like Laura Harrier. Keep your color from fading by opting for a sulfate-free shampoo—it won’t give you the same delicious lather, but your color will stay bold for way longer.

6

Platinum

Blondes do have more fun, Mrs. Rowland!! Go against the grain this fall and opt for a fully opaque, bright-as-hell platinum dye job. Although it’s unexpected for a season filled with dark colors, the cool undertones are a masterful way to manipulate your way into a fall ’do while going lighter.

7

Barely Black

However, if your vibe is dark, moody, and grungey, then try this deep-brown hair color, as seen above on Kaia Gerber. It’s basically black, just with a bit more warmth in the undertone that veers more in brunette territory. Consider the upscale, adult version of your dream goth makeover from 8th grade.

8

Bold Burgundy

Hey, if you’re already swapping to red wine, why not swap your hair color to it too? This sumptuous hue is so full of depth, it doesn’t need highlights to have dimension. It catches the light all on its own (plus, a shine spray surely helps).

9

Rich Honey

Honey highlights are the best accessory this fall (only next to all the chic fall jewelry trends our editors predicted). The look is warm, opulent manuka though—not the stuff that comes out of a plastic bear—so beat brassiness with a hair toner twice a month.

10

Caramel Ribbons

Hair colorist Abby Haliti previously told Cosmo that her clients always ask for warm-toned highlights in the fall for dimension that looks natural. Peep Ciara’s caramel highlights above—they’re bold and chunky, yes, but the rich, warm tone makes it less stark.

11

Pearly White

Everybody wants Beyoncé’s stunning Cowboy Carter blonde this fall, because it’s so striking. Make sure it shine bright like a diamond pearl with a glass-hair treatment once a week though (I love Oribe Mirror Rinse Glass Hair Treatment and Drybar Liquid Glass Instant Glossing Rinse).

12

Baby-Lighted Brunette

Selena Gomez’s itsy-bitsy highlights add just the hint of dimension to make her color pop without adding too much stark contrast (or totally frying her dark hair). “People want to get a strong fall color, but they don’t want a lot of maintenance,” says hairstylist Stephanie Brown, which is why she recommends “low-maintenance, high-impact” hair colors.

13

Amber Brown

EmRata’s hair looks so damn glowy lately. Try coating your hair in a color glaze to add a warm gloss and shine without changing your color all too much.

14

Mushroom Balayage

Gray hair colors are a mainstay for Brown’s client list. But a way to ease into the trend is this ashy balayage look on Mia Goth above. It has a soothing, subdued quality that lends itself perfectly to all those earthy fall vibes.

15

Iced Meringue

Fun fact: “Iced meringue” was the name of the boxed dye from L’Oréal my mom used in the early ’00s to get her hair the same bleach-blonde as Gabbriette above. So makes sense that it’s now a color in 2024 that I’m eyeing for myself. Obvi, this will require quite a bit of bleaching, so stock up on hair-bonding treatments to strengthen afterward.

16

Warm Espresso

That’s that warm(e) espresso! (so sorry). Anyway! Simone Ashley’s signature color has been on my mood boards for years, thanks to its ultra-dark color with red undertones that add dimension throughout her curls. This is a great one to copy if you already have dark hair too because you can just layer on a warm toner to mimic the richness.

17

Vanilla Sugar

Speaking of espresso, Sabrina Carpenter’s sheer blonde is looking very (not short but) sweet these days. (Okay, no more, I promise!!) This creamy, vanilla blonde is about to be one of the most asked-for colors in salons, according to every stylist I’ve spoken to.

18

Soft Balayage

Although (Cosmo cover girl, heeeyyy) Ashley Park’s hair looks one-dimensional in the first pic above, if you scroll, you’ll see she’s got a super-underrated balayage throughout her ends that adds some brightness to her ends. IK what you’re thinking: Why bright for fall? But it’s actually a great hack for making your hair pop a bit more against all those big black coats and jackets.

19

Spiced Ginger

Welp, there ya have it: All the reasons you needed to go red this fall. Thanks, Storm Reid! This auburn hair color is about to be all over everyone’s feeds this fall as the go-to red shade for those who want a more toned-down take on red hair. It’s got all the spice—thanks to a mix of ginger and deep-red tones—with some extra depth to take away a lil too much orange or fire.

20

Glossy Black

Mark my words: Everyone’s going to want glass hair that’s practically blinding this fall (as a beauty editor, I’ve tested about a dozen new shine treatments to prove it). And the It Girl color to match will be this ebony, jet-black, as seen on Camila Cabello. The key to getting that color to last though? Color-safe shampoo and conditioner plus a weekly color-depositing conditioner to keep your black color vibrant.
